We’re all aware of the sterotypical little “one-dog towns” that have a cop hiding behind the billboard, waiting on speeders, but the truth is, the big money is (where else?) in the cities. In that regard, Mayor White’s effort to make us a world-class city has scored at least one major sucess: Houston is #5 in the National Motorist Association’s “Top Ten Speed Trap Cities” list.
1. Detroit, Michigan suburbs
2. Washington D.C.
3. Orlando, Fla.
4. Colorado Springs, Colo.
5. Houston, Tex.
6. Virginia Beach, Va.
7. Austin, Tex.
8. Baton Rouge, La.
9. Nashville, Tenn.
10. Fresno, Calif. This list was created from the NMA’s SpeedTrap Exchange, a site devoted to identifying the location of speed traps.
It’s not actually a scientific survey by any means; the list was compiled from viewer reports to the website. Note that Texas is the only state to score two cities in the top ten, what with Austin at #7.
It’s easy money and zero effort to pass out tickets here in Houston since the average speed on most highways and streets is around 15 mph over the posted limit.
