A Brief Interlude of Animé

Ok, so far I’ve watched:

  • Mars Daybreak #6, which finished that series. Entirely too clichéd at the end.
  • Godannar #5, which puts me 1 DVD from completion. Some answers are appearing, but not enough. My psychic theory has seen evidence both pro and con. We do get one very important answer: the two American pilots aren’t lesbians. At least, not to start.
  • Excel Saga #1, just into the third episode. At that point I decided that watching it alone was a waste. I put it back in the case, and I’m going to hold on to it until Dr. Heinous and I can kick back for a couple of days worth of animé binging, and then I’m going to watch in a state of legal intoxication. It’s just the kind of show that the brain cells should not be operational. Well, not all of them, anyway. This show is what Bobo Bobobobobo-(oh, whatever) wishes it could be. It’s just so hilariously wrong, on so many levels.

Excel Saga probably really should be watched with someone else. It gets truly bizarre.

Certainly the first episode is strange. Excel dies about five times, and she murders the original mangaka twice. (And did you notice that the halo worn by the “good” chibi-Excel is a flourescent light bulb?)

Excel Saga gets bizarre? You mean, as in crazier than this?

Excel may have died about 5 times (in the first ten minutes, actually), and then accidentally destroys the entire show by killing the mangaka, but Hyatt died more than that just listening to IllPalazo’s speech.

Hyatt coughs the opening song, and the dog barks the closing song–which is about being eaten by Excel. Wrong, wrong, wrong…. this show just takes the cake.

Then Iz-chan resets reality and eats the cake….

I didn’t look at the halo that closely, but I noticed something was weird. (I watch on a 17″ computer monitor).

So is Puni Puni Poemi more of the same? The previews sure try to make it look that way.

It’s really short. I have it and I only watched about half of the first episode. It tries to be just as insane, if not more so, but it’s less coherent and, I’m afraid, less charming and witty. Anyway, after 26 episodes of this, why would anyone need any more?

And yes, Excel Saga gets a lot more bizarre before it’s all over.

Daaaaaaaayum. (Say it with really hick “Boss Hogg” accent.)

And I have to wait on DE, because if I get started on any large series, I’ll try to binge through to the end–and I can’t afford that kind of eyestrain and sleep deprivation right now.

I feel the brain cells die when that show comes on. It’s lowest-common-denominator funny. Its humor is like crotch-shot slapstick. You can get a reflexive wince and chuckle, but its just too unoriginal to be truly funny.

Oh well, everybody’s got their own tastes.
